Crimes that Prevent a Citizen from Obtaining CPL

So You are ready to apply for Concealed pistol license, but you don’t know if something in your past will prevent you from obtaining the license. Do you know what crimes will prevent you from applying for your Concealed Pistol License (“CPL”)?

Hello everyone, my name is Joseph Radzwion IV, Your Trusted Attorney with Radzwion Law, PLLC, and in today’s post we will be looking at felonies convictions that prevent a Michigander from obtaining a Concealed Pistol License.

Felony Convictions

An individual who has been convicted of a felony in Michigan or in another state or maybe even county, will be unable to obtain a CPL here in the State of Michigan.

While this next point may not be considered as being “convicted with a felony,” just know that Michigan law treats any military veteran who was dishonorably discharged as ineligible to obtain a CPL as well.

In summary, if an individual has been dishonorable discharged from the armed forces, or an individual has been convicted of a felony, they will be ineligible to obtain a CPL.

Tip to Think Like a Lawyer

Being “Charged with a Felony” and “Convicted of a Felony” are two very different things. Here’s how. Let’s say Mr. Wesson was “charged” with a felony and was sentenced under one of Michigan’s delayed sentence statutes. Mr. Wesson then completes his conditions of probation etc., many of the delayed sentence statutes have language that states upon successful completion of probation the individual shall not be considered “convicted” of the original “charge.” This could result in still being able to apply for a CPL.
